European Parliament Release Proposal On Universal USB-C Type For All Electronic Devices
On June 7th, 2022, the European Parliament released a protocol on the amended Radio Equipment Directive to harmonize the charging interface for frequently used small and medium-sized portable electronic devices. The amendment aims to reduce electronic waste per year and let consumer can make their own choice on purchasing a new device with/without a charging device.
Based on the agreement, mobile phones and similar categories or classes of radio equipment (tablets, e-readers, earbuds, digital cameras, headphones and headsets, handheld videogame consoles, and portable speakers) are rechargeable via a wired cable will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C port. Laptops will also have to be adapted to the requirements by 40 months after the entry into force.
After the protocol is approved, it will enter into force 20 days after it is published in the EU Official Journal and will start to apply to electronic devices within the regulated scope after 2 years.
In addition, other countries, such as the Chamber of Deputies of Chile have also purposed a draft law on April 21st, 2022 to establish the use of a standardized universal charger (USB Type-C) for different types of electronic devices.
