Malaysia MCMC Releases Additional Requirements for Wireless Media Players and Set-Top Boxes

On 23rd June 2021, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has decided to impose additional requirements for the certification and importation of Wireless Media Players (WMP) and Set-Top Boxes (STB) effective from 1st January 2022. The current temporary freeze on all new applications for the certification of WMP and STB devices will remain in effect until these new requirements are implemented.
The new requirements shall be applicable to all WMP/STB that meets the following criteria:
1.Device which is designed for connection to television and setup to the internet via Wi-Fi connectivity;
2.Device which runs on an open-source operating system such as Android;
3.Device which enables television to be used for browsing the internet, streaming video contents from online source;
4.For consumers market (WMP/STB for digital signage/advertisement or similar applications are excluded).
