South Korea Allocates 6 GHz Band for Unlicensed Use
On 15th October, South Korea Regulator - the Ministry of Science and ICT stated that they have approved 1.2GHz of spectrum in the 6GHz band (5,925 MHz to 7,125 MHz) for unlicensed use.
It was decided to allow free access to indoor use for the devices operating in the 5.925-7.125 GHz band with a maximum EIRP of 25mW. For device-to-device connections like tethering, spectrum sitting in the 5,925MHz-6,455MHz range will also be available for use everywhere, indoors or outdoors.
In the ministry's own testing, it demonstrated that 6GHz Wi-Fi could reach speeds of 2.1Gbps, which is five times faster than the currently available Wi-Fi speed of around 400 to 600Mbps.
The Ministry of Science and ICT is also planning to extend public Wi-Fi service to 41,000 additional locations throughout the country by 2022.
