Canada Publishes Decision on Technical and Policy Framework for White Space Devices

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) released the decision on the Technical and Policy Framework for White Space Devices in March 2019.

The Decision gives informs about the spectrum utilization by white space devices in the very-high frequency (VHF) and the ultra-high frequency (UHF) bands (54-72 MHz, 76-88 MHz, 174-216 MHz, and 470-698 MHz frequency ranges).

The Decision is based on the consultation process in SMSE-018-17.

The following decisions were made during the process:

D.1 It is possible to use fixed white space devices in TV channels 3 and 4 (60-72 MHz)

D.2 Apart from fixed white space devices, such types as personal/portable devices can operate in TV channels 14 to 20 (470-512 MHz)

D.3 Currently, it is still forbidden to use white space devices in channel 37 (608-614 MHz)

D.4 Currently, it is still forbidden to use white space devices in the 600 MHz commercial mobile bands (617-652 MHz and 663-698 MHz)

D.5 It is not eligible to use white space devices in the guard band (614-617 MHz) or in the lower 5 MHz portion of the duplex gap (652-657 MHz)

D.6 It is possible to use low-power personal/portable white space devices in the upper 6 MHz portion of the duplex gap (657-663 MHz)

ISED will also update the relevant regulatory and technical standards to take into account all the improvements in the characteristics of white space technology that has been made in the Decision.
