Pakistan changes Type Approval Exemption List

Further to PCS’ Regulatory Update of 22nd January 2018, Pakistan Regulator Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) implemented new changes to their Type Approval Exemption List on 19th December 2018. These changes come into effect immediately.

As of 19th December 2018, the following categories have been removed from PTA’s Type Approval Exemption List:

1. RFID/Bluetooth/NFC devices

2. Wi-Fi Access Points operating in ISM Band and conform to PTA ISM Band Regulation SRO 287(I)2016

3. Low powered/ short range key less entry system/ remote controls on non-interference basis

Going forward, manufacturers will be required to seek mandatory Type Approval for all products falling in the device categories listed above, which are imported into Pakistan as of 19th December 2018.

PTA’s latest Type Approval Exemption List is shown below. For these categories, it remains the case that manufacturers are not required to seek Type Approval in Pakistan.

1. Networking Equipment (Switches, Firewalls, Servers, Storage Devices)

2. Laptops /Desktops/Personal Computer (Non-Sim based devices)

3. Tablet PC with Wi-Fi only Functionality (Non-Sim based devices)

4. GPS only devices

5. Smart Watches with Bluetooth / Wi-fi functionality only (Without SIM or Tracking Features)
