BIS Issues Guidelines for Verification of Rated Capacity in Lithium Batteries

On February 10, 2026, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) issued guidelines for verifying the rated capacity of portable sealed secondary lithium cells and batteries. Manufacturers must comply with the test method specified in Clause 7.3.1 of IS 16047 (Part 3):2018 / IEC 61960-3:2017.

Key Points as below:

•      New Registrations & Renewals: Mandatory testing under the IS 16047 standard will be required starting May 1, 2027.

•      Existing Registrations: Manufacturers must ensure compliance and submit a verification report by April 30, 2027, or by the final registration expiration date, whichever is later.
